Disney’s traditional characters may not have been your sole cartoon staple growing up, but there’s no denying the universal allure of the Princesses, which have had a marketing bonanza in recent years.
Take an enchanted walk down nostalgia’s lane when you watch your favourite fairy tale characters come alive as Disney LIVE! presents the latest stage show Three Classic Fairy Tales in Singapore.
Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald serve as narrators, taking you on a journey back to where ‘happily ever after’ are an everyday occurrence. The performance begins with the 4 finding a magical storybook in Mickey’s attic, allowing iconic moments of the 3 tales to come to live on stage.
With the help of stunning choreography, spectacular lighting and sound, incredible-looking costumes and stage props, each tale will definitely bring a smile to your face, whatever your age. Relive your childhood moments as you sing along to classic Disney songs such as “Heigh Ho”, “Bippity-Boppity-Boo” and “Be Our Guest”.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Three Classic Fairy Tales kicks off with the story of Snow White and her narcissistic Queen stepmother’s schemes to kill her because her magic mirror no longer says that the Queen is the prettiest of them all.
The other protagonists in this fairy tale – the 7 dwarfs: Doc, Bashful, Sleepy, Sneezy, Happy, Grumpy and Dopey take in Snow White as she has nowhere else to go in the forest. Snow White repays them by cleaning and looking after the house of the dwarfs.
The plot is as familiar as they go for this decades-old story, but the production worked in interaction during the performance as the kids glued to their seats promptly replied Snow White when she asked whether she should take a bite off the apple that was given by the disguised wicked witch. The cries from the audience were even louder when the princess asked for a second time, as if the stadium was only filled with kids.
Cinderella
The second act came straight away after the story of Snow White ended, as Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy appeared on stage again to tell the next story from the magic storybook. Cinderella starts off with the beautiful maiden, for whom the play is named, slaving away with the cleaning and washing while her stepmother and stepsisters keep ordering her around in the house.
Exaggerated body language was a less appreciated feature of the stage performance, but the quick costume changing was really impressive, making the audience wonder if the performer is indeed the same person.
Again, the fairy godmother of Cinderella interacted with the children as she asked everyone in the stadium to say the magic word “Bippity-Boppity-Boo” to make the spell work. They were certainly awed by the different kinds of costumes ranging from classy ball gowns to simple villagers’ garments and the boisterous live energy that will energise the audience.
Beauty and the Beast
The last act shows Belle living as a commoner in the village, who is wooed by Gaston, a man who is very much a popular guy in town. When her father is held captive by the beast for cutting a rose from his backyard, Belle decides to take her ailing father’s place and becomes a prisoner of the beast, only to unwittingly, fall in love with the beast.
How the crew transformed stage props used was amazing, especially in the case of the stairs that were fully utilised in different scenes and stories, simply by just changing its angle.
The story closes when Belle proclaims her love for the beast, breaking the curse upon his head and turning him back into a human being.
Fairy tales never fail to warm the heart, whether young or old, and smiles were plastered on many faces as they walked out of the stadium. A little girl dressed up as a princess, and apparently a big fan of Cinderella exclaimed, even before the show started, “Cinderella is so pretty!”
Disney LIVE! Three Classic Fairy Tales will be shown at the Singapore Indoor Stadium from Nov 18 to Nov 23. Tickets are available at www.sistic.com.sg.
